Have Your Say: “Humble Pie” Time Will Tell, But Spurs May Now Have A Massive Opportunity – Here’s A Few Reasons

Vital Spurs is going to be a very interesting place in the coming days, with so many posters taking every chance they had to criticise Jose Mourinho in recent years. Well, like it or not, he’s the new manager. Who wants a slice of humble pie ;-)?

I have probably been in the minority on VS, but I admire Mourinho’s ability to win but it’s not the appointment which I would have made. It seems an awkward fit with Levy. But some good can come out of it, certainly for fans such as myself that long for trophies, and are willing to compromise on the style of football to get there.

However, even I am under no illusion that this is a short term fix and not a long term marriage.

On the other hand, here are a few things to consider – but I can see truth in all of them:

1. If Levy wants to change the fans’ perception that he is intent on winning now, no other appointment sends a bigger statement. Mourinho isn’t a choice for the future, it’s an immediate action to win things now.

2. We’re getting a manager who is at the opposite end of the spectrum to MP regarding tactics. A master tactician who will game plan based on a specific opponent, rather than develop a “philosophy” irrespective of the opponent. For Spurs fans who have accused MP of being tactically naive, you’ll be getting the very opposite now.

3. Levy is clearly stepping out of his comfort zone as far as not appointing a “yes man”. No manager will put more pressure on him, and I actually credit Levy for taking up the challenge. It may/probably will backfire and end in tears, but maybe Levy is willing to give another model a go.

4. Any player who is disillusioned about the current path with MP will see this as a dramatic shift. For players like Eriksen, Toby etc, this may just convince them to stay. Any player who wasn’t merely content with just being in the CL and not winning things, well, Mourinho opens up new possibilities. In fact, I am less worried about players losing their “mentor” in MP, than I am focused on the fact that quite a few players may relish the chance to work under a manager who has won things everywhere he’s been. Maybe those players will decide that you don’t necessarily have to leave to win things.

5. Maybe the club feared that other big name exits (Son, Kane) were on the cards, and decided to take drastic measures in order to prevent them.

6. Mourinho himself is also taking a big risk, gambling on his ability to work well with Levy. He too could have gone down the road of comfort, taken a well paid job in China, and surfed on his reputation until retirement. He has jumped right back into the eye of the cyclone. It’s either brave or incredibly foolish, we shall see.

7. Also something to consider: New stadium? Check. Very attractive/manageable debt situation? Check. World-famous manager? Check. Perfect time to sell? Is this just the most visible and elaborate case of window-dressing, in view of an upcoming sale?

All interesting points to discuss, in my opinion.

I am sad to see MP go and again, disappointed in how Levy has managed the situation, but I also see opportunity in the situation. Time will tell.
